A Tibetan singer preserves culture

The Exile Tibetan Singers Association and several performers held a five-day concert from 11 to 15 January in Sarnath, India, on the sidelines of the teachings given by the Dalai Lama. The concerts provided music, fun and joy, as well as a sense of unity among the devotees and fans.

Concert for jailed Tibetan artistes in Delhi

"Popular singers of the exile Tibetan community came out to perform for an event that is aimed at creating awareness about two Tibetans jailed by China for voicing their dissent against the Chinese government policies. Tenzin Gyalpo, better known among Tibetan music fans as Michael, had long dreamt of bringing together artistes to perform for "voiceless" Tibetans in Tibet. Gyalpo organized a concert in the Samyeling Tibetan colony, in Majnu ka Tilla on Sunday."

Dear Techung,

On behalf of the UC Berkeley Art Museum, I want to express heartfelt thanks for the magnificent performance of Tibetan music you presented earlier this month. I cannot imagine a more enriching complement to the museum's current exhibition of Tibetan art than the afternoon of song and music, as well as the enlightening commentary you offered about the music and its relation to Tibetan culture.

I think the audience found it especially meaningful that you presented your own compositions along with traditional music. This demonstrated, beaufiully and effectively, how alive musical tradition is for Tibetans. In particular, your music for children (Semshae-Heart Songs) expressed a further dimension of the ongoing life of tradition and your own contribution to it.

I also want to comment on the beauty of your singing. Everyone was clearly enraptured by your music, both vocal and instrumental. You also have a gift for relating to your audience! (and it was wonderful to see such a large turn-out for the performance).

For now, I wish you the best in bringing Tibetan music and culture to audiences everywhere. Again, warmest thanks for the memorable performance.

Sincerely,

Sherry Goodman
Director of Education and Academic Relations

I had the pleasure of working with Techung, the young Tibetan singer at a recent concert at Carnegie Hall(February 3,2009). He is a highly gifted singer, bursting with talent and personality. I think he is an unusually attractive performer and clearly has the potential to appeal to an audience far beyond the ethnic Tibetan community who already know him quite well. A young man of such talent representing the culture, as it were, of this exiled and oppressed community, could very well have the effect of bringing greater attention to the problems faced by Tibetans living inside and outside of Tibet.

I wish him and those who support him the very best success.

"Techung" (aka Tashi D. Sharzur) is an exceptional Tibetan musical talent: rigorously trained as an opera "star" by the grand masters of Lhamo, the traditional opera, at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, and with the a life-long background in Tibetan folk music. In recent years, he has written and performed dozens of new songs. While each song appears unmistakably Tibetan and traditional, they are in reality modern compositions with contemporary lyrics, often his own. "Yarlung-Tibetan Songs of Love and Freedom" is an outstanding example of new Tibetan music that will reach a global audience.
